Key facts: the City of London

  • London's foreign exchange markets are the largest in the world, accounting for over a third of global turnover.

  • More people have jobs linked to London's financial services sector than live in the entire city of Frankfurt, its closest European rival.

  • The City of London has the greatest concentration of banks in the world, and is responsible for about a fifth of total international bank lending.

  • The City also accommodates the world's largest insurance and re-insurance industry.

  • The London Stock Exchange is one of the world's largest, and trades more foreign equities than any other.

  • London is the centre of Europe's largest venture capital industry.

  • London has been voted Europe's leading business location for the tenth year in a row. The survey of 500 senior European executives was conducted by European Cities Monitor. London's score was more than 47% higher than Paris (in second place) and 106% higher than Frankfurt (in third). London was rated first in six key criteria: ease of access to markets, external transport links, quality of telecommunications, internal transport, availability of office space, and languages spoken.
