The Culture & Education Section of the Embassy is the local
office of the British Council. The British Council is the UK's international
organisation for educational and cultural relations. The Council
creates opportunities for people across the world in education,
English language teaching, the arts, science, and government. It
has a network of 230 offices and teaching centres in 109 countries.
In China, we help British and Chinese organisations work together
in support of China's education, legal and economic reforms.
We provide free information and advice on studying in the UK,
and manage examinations and scholarships on behalf of UK educational
and professional institutions.
We also bring creative and innovative cultural events to China.
In 1999, these events were attended by over 90,000 people. This
year, 'Football Nation', a touring exhibition which uses multimedia
effects to recreate the atmosphere of a British stadium on match
day, will open in Shanghai on 5 July, and then tour
Beijing(opening 26 July) and Guangzhou. A major exhibition of Henry Moore sculptures will
come to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou in October.
To promote wider and more effective learning of the English language,
we give assistance to language teachers in China. We also run examination
centres in ten Chinese cities.
