The political section of the Embassy deals with issues of political
concern, whether bilateral or global. These include human rights
and legal matters, international security and disarmament, the work
of the United Nations, the fight against drugs and AIDS, and the
environment. Members of the section also study China's society and
politics, arrange visits by ministers and other senior officials,
and handle contacts with the British and Chinese media.
The economic section is responsible for bilateral contacts on
financial and economic subjects, and matters arising from Britain's
or China's membership of international bodies such as the World
Trade Organisation, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund.
Members of the economic section also report on developments in China's
industry and agriculture, and the progress of economic reform.
The defence section looks after relations between the British
and Chinese governments on military matters.
